孟子の性善説の考え方を説明し、「性」はあとからの当て字で、元は「生」であったということを述べている。
告子は仁義は後から教育によって身につくもんだというたとえ話をするが、孟子はそれを否定する。
こぶ柳の性質を曲げて、器を作ることと仁義の解釈とは違う。仁義は作られるのではなく、人間にもともとあるものなのだ。
荀子は人の本性は悪である。その本性が善であるというのは、後天的な人為の結果である。
荀子は性悪説だと言われているが、教育によって仁義を身につけることが出来ると言っている。ということは孟子の結果と一緒だということになる。
孟子は人間が本来、善の心を持っているのだが、それを見失っている。自分の身を修めて、天命に至ることが必要であると言っている。
告子が言った。性に善不善の区別が無いのは、言うなればこの水に東西の区別無きが如きものである。
